This is an amazing composition, and its rendition in the movie Rang De Basanti is great. And a very profound part of the composition is also that the poet is an Urdu poet, Bismil Azimbadi. It never fails to amuse me when this poem would be quoted by our "Hindutva" parties to further their bigotted agendas :)

And it also reminds me of this sentence: A cage. To stay behind bars until use and old age accept them and all chance of valor has gone beyond beyond recall or desire.

  2. First got to know this one on watching Manoj Kumar's "Bhagat Singh" movie. But I always found something missing in that.. finally, I found out what it was when Atul Kulkarni recited the poem in "Rang de Basanti". I can probably imagine Bhagat Singh et al. reciting it the way it was done in rang de basanti...

  3. Yes. I too liked the Rang De Basanti rendition. I was going to post the youtube link to this blog, but was called off to hunt for some missing socks... sigh! I will add it :)

Another interesting tidbit about this song is that the poet is an Urdu poet, Bismil Azimbadi. It never failed to amuse me when this poem would be quoted by our "Hindutva" parties to further their bigotted agendas :)

  4. In a recent movie that I saw (forgot the name, but it's about bomb blasts in local trains in Mumbai), Kay Kay plays a 'hardline' Hindu character. When he goes to a Muslim locality with his friends to catch the local "Muslim terrorists", there is a Mohd. Rafi song playing in the background. And he makes a comment "Kishore Kumar nahin sunenge ye log!". The irony is that it's a patriotic song. I liked that scene a lot.

Also, "Man Tarpat Hari darshan ko aaj" is a collaboration by Naushad-Shakeel-Rafi. So much for "Hindutva" :-)

  5. True. I have seen so many people who are staunchly anti-Muslim and want to kick Muslims out of India, then turn around and are Shahrukh Khan fans, are proud of Rehman or praise APJ Abdul Kalam. Cognitive dissonance, I call it. :)
What bothers me is that if you are a Muslim in India, you'd better be accomplished. Or you have no respect in India. This is no way to treat 13% of our citizens!

  6. guys .. if you are discussing religion read this ..

Musalman aur hindu hai do, ek magar unka pyala.
ek magar unka madiralay, ek magar unki hala.
Bair badhate mandir masjid. Mel karati Madhushala.

The composition in the blog is written by a person who is passionate about his motherland.

So everyone who shares his feelings should recite these words.

So why are we even discussing abt religion?
Mandir and Masjid will create diversity.
    Madhushala will unite everyone...

  8. I am an atheist, and I am a minority. You cannot get rid of Mandir and Masjid will exist. Different religions are here to stay.
What you can get rid of is intolerance and xenophobia (in religious context).

(Co)Incidentally.. India under DADA lost the World Cup final to Australia on 23rd march.

    23rd march is shahid din.

So this gives weight age to my album 'sarfaroshi ki tamanna'
